Anabolic Steroids Synthetic compounds that are chemically related to testosterone Promotes development of secondary sex characteristics called androgen effects Accelerates muscle grown anabolic effects

Cannot synthetically develop the drug without the androgen effect Current research shows little or marginal effect on enhanced strength or performance

Classified as a controlled dangerous substance and under the control of the DEA Harmful side effects include liver cancer, masculinizing effects on females, Infertility, diminished sex drive in males, Premature bone growth cessation in teenagers, Mood and personality changes

Drug Control Laws The severity of a penalty may depend on
Weight Concentration in the manufacture Distribution Possession of a certain drug Chemical report must contain all information needed to properly charge a suspect of the existing law

Legal drug classification system created to prevent and control drug abuse Based on potential for abuse, dependence, and medical value Also includes a provision that a controlled substance analog (similar in chemical structure to a controlled substance) will carry the same penalties Designer drugs (fentanyl, more potent than morphine)
