Definitions Luminance:The amount of light reflected from or transmitted through a material. Measured in candelas/ft (candelas/m ). Perceived as brightness. Luminance is the product of illuminance and the surface of interest. Luminance dependes on illuminance and surface reflectance. Fenestration: The opening(s) or aperture(s) in a building that permit the entry of daylight. Monopoint: A single trackhead mounted to a ceiling canopy rather than on a linear track. Monopoints are typically used where no ceiling plenum depth exists for recessed lights and/or where a more permanent, neat look is desired over tracklighting. Vignette: An abbreviated portion of a lighting layout that expresses the typical characteristics (such as dimensions, orientations, and type of luminaries) of the lighting plan without developing a complete, entire plan(s).

RCP (Reflected Ceiling Plan): A mirror image (reflects) view of the ceiling-as if looking from above through the ceiling to a mirrored floor and seeing the reflection of the ceiling plan. Typically shows lighting and ceiling changes such as coves, slots, bulkheads, etc. Many designers today elect simply to plop a uniform array of downlights or rectilinear recessed luninaries on an RCP. *Recessed lighting offers a clean, streamlined look in a home. It can increase the amount of light in a room, highlight artwork or other special features, and open up spaces so they look and feel bigger.

The walls are "washed" in light with this recessed lighting
A recessed can provide inconspicuous light. Types of Light Bulbs for Recessed Lighting When selecting or installing recessed lighting, several types of fixtures and bulbs are available for specific needs: ●Incandescent, also known as “A” bulbs, are inexpensive and good for general light or wall washing with the use of reflectors. ●“R” bulbs are most common and have a reflective surface included on the back of the bulb.

●Halogen bulbs offer a clean white light, and are available in both flood and spot types in sizes to fit 4-, 5-, or 6-inch fixtures. ●Low voltage halogen bulbs have a long life and put out more light than incandescent bulbs, but require the use of transformers and special low voltage housings. When to Avoid Recessed Ligthing Ceilings of concrete or with ornate plasterwork or delicate molding details are not good candidates for recessed lighting. In these spaces, choose a chandelier (if there is an electrical box in the ceiling), wall sconces, or table lamps instead.

Tvis: It Represents the visible light transmittance in decimal form (egi, 0.62 or 62%) of a light transmitting material (commonly available for glass and acrylics). Interreflection: Light reflecting back and forth among surfaces diminishing each time as a function of LRV. Higher LRVs results in better interreflection and more efficient lighting.

Surface Mounts: Luminaires mounted to ceilings and walls
Surface Mounts: Luminaires mounted to ceilings and walls. Sometimes puerly functional and sometimes decorative/functional. Temporal Control: Dynamic control over time, involves a time machine or programmed computer program to control light intensity, color, motion (e.g., chasing effects) flashing, and the like. Static control or the traditional definition of “control” is the simple act of turning a light or series of lights on and off, or dimming them from one steady state to another.

Egress Lighting: A reference to the electrical power service provided by the electric utility. When normal power is interrupted, some sort of emergency power system is energized, which is then used to power select or all lighting and equipments. Egress Lighting requirements are typically 0.1 and 1 fc (about 1.1 and 11 lux). Task Lighting: It refers to the lighting in a space specifically designed to light the task. Typically localized lighting-using lights positioned close to the task surface or area. Ambient Lighting: It refers to the general background lighting in a space. Typically considered as one of three layers of light-task lighting, ambient lighting, and architectural feathure or accent lighting. Because ambient lighting is the background lighting, it will likely affect all people in a space.

Accent Lighting: It refers to the lighting in a space specifically designed to light special features or details such as artwork and architectural elements (columns, pilasters, coves, and niches). Sidelighting: It refers to daylighting that enters a space from the side, typically through windows. Toplighting: It refers to daylighting that enters a space from above, typically through skylight.
