Sound Sound Wave Physics
2
What are Sound Waves Sound is caused when vibrations are created from a source. These vibrations cause air particles to collide with one another, producing longitudinal waves. As a result, sound waves require a material medium through which to travel.
3
Creating sound Sound is created from a tuning fork by vibrating the air. The tines vibrate at a specific frequency based on the shape, size and mass of the tuning fork. The air vibrates at the same frequency as the tuning fork.
4
YOUR voice! Your voice is created by vibrating your vocal chords.

Investigation Soon SPEED OF Sound
Sound travels at very specific speeds in air depending on the moisture, density, and temperature of the air. The biggest dependence for the speed is the temperature. All frequencies of sound travel at the same speed through the air. Investigation Soon
11
SPEED OF SOUND EQUATION
The speed of sound is dependent on the properties of the air. The biggest contributing factor is the air temperature. T is the temperature in oC.
12
Speed of Sound At zero degrees celcius the speed of sound is 332 m/s. At below zero temperatures the speed is less than 332 m/s and above zero temperatures the speed is greater than 332 m/s. Caculate the speed of sound at room temperature; 22oC.
13
MACH NUMBER The Mach number is a ratio of the speed of an object compared to the speed of sound. i.e. Mach 1 is the speed of sound, Mach 2 is is two times the speed of sound, etc.
