2 continental drift: hypothesis that continents once formed a single landmass, broke up, & drifted to their present location first proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1912 called the single landmass Pangaea which means “all land”

4 Wegener first noticed how the continents fit together like a puzzle

5 Wegener used several different types of evidence to support his hypothesis:
fossils rock formations climatic evidence

6 matching fossils on different continents

7 matching rock formations – same age & type – on different continents

8 glacial deposits and grooves in warm areas

9 coal deposits – formed from plants in warm, wet regions – are found in cold areas (Siberia!)

10 Wegener said the continents moved by plowing through the rock of the ocean floor
was disproven by geologic evidence so continental drift was discounted because Wegener couldn’t explain HOW it occurred
