1 Homework on earthquakes
Go through and highlight important information. Produce a revision card on the outline. Answer the Exam question Where? Why? Warm water over 27°C e.g. Tropics This temperature allows for evaporation of water to form water vapour creating a centre of low pressure at the surface. As it rises it cools and condenses to form cloud. The cloud condenses and releases latent heat, which serves to power the hurricane, as well as causing heavy rain. Towering cumulonimbus clouds are formed. Tropical storms usually occur in late summer or early Autumn, when sea temperatures are at their highest. Notice how hurricanes usually hit America around September/October. The cooling effect of hurricanes passing over water (or land) at higher latitudes results in them losing energy. Oceans (rather than continents) Large supply of water and moisture for evaporation. As it moves it continues to pick up moisture from the sea, becoming ever more powerful. On reaching land the supply of water – the hurricane’s fuel – is cut off and the storm begins to weaken and die. The effect of friction from passing over land slows movement. 5-20° N or S of the Equator The rotation of the earth sets up a spinning motion due to the Coriolis effect and the storm assumes its characteristic circular vortex shape. When surface winds reach an average of 120 kph (75 mph), the storm officially becomes a hurricane. Any closer to the Equator than 5° there is not sufficient ‘spin’ resulting from the rotation of the earth and therefore hurricanes do not occur. Areas of air instability Trade winds rush in towards this low pressure area. Air is converging on the ocean surface and rising rapidly, developing powerful winds.
