Counter-argument Now what?

Counter-argument has two stages: you turn against your argument to challenge it and then you turn back to re-affirm it.

You introduce this turn against with a phrase like:
One might object here that... It might seem that... It's true that...

Then you state the case against yourself as briefly but as clearly and forcefully as you can, pointing to evidence where possible. Remember, you must be able to prove the counterargument is weak/wrong or else it will work against you!

For instance… Students might object to Saturday classes and say that they need to work on Saturdays; however,

The Turn Back Your return to your own argument—which you announce with a but, yet, however, nevertheless or still—must be confident. Explain how the opposing view is mistaken, not a problem, or less important than your position. Restate your thesis.

For instance… Students might object that they need to work on Saturdays and should not have to attend school six days a week; however, according to Boys’ Life magazine, many experts have found that the more time students spend in school, the higher their test scores. This shows that Saturday classes would be beneficial to student success.
