2. What’s shark tagging ? To attach tag on sharks for tracking them
Different types of tag (conventional, electronic, satellite)
Different attachment methods (feeding, implantation in the dorsal fin, surgery…)
Tagging studies permit to:
Identify spatial or temporal patterns in habitat use
Examine post-release mortality
Validate growth rate and natural mortality
Verify distribution, migrations and stock estimates
Provide essential information for shark species stock assessments

3. Project context WCPFC Shark Research Plan (SRP)
to provide a scientific basis for evaluating stock status
to assist the Commission in meeting its responsibilities for ensuring the sustainability of shark stocks
to inform future discussion by the Commission on the need for further management measures for sharks
Coordinated review of all Pacific shark tagging data
To create a ‘meta’database about shark tagging research
to understand the extent and usefulness of existing information
to identify the need for further work in shark tagging research
