What was Apartheid? System of government from 1948 to @1990.
Afrikaans word meaning separation/separateness white minority ruled black majority did not have many rights. Origins in European colonialism and imperialism in Africa

1948: APARTHEID ESTABLISHED
1948: the National Party (a white, Afrikaner party) was voted into power Party creates a system to separate white and black populations Called apartheid (separateness)

Population Registration Act
Grouped every South African into a particular race. - White - Black - Coloured - Indian/Asian

Separate Representation of Voters Act
- strips voting rights from non-whites

Group Areas Act - segregated residential areas - helps create “townships” ringing urban areas

Bantu Authorities Act Divided black pop. into Bantustans (“homelands”) 10 ethnic groups assigned a “homeland that were declared independent of the South African gov’t.

Mixed Marriages Act and Immorality Amendment
- Banned marriages between diff. racial groups

- segregates all public facilities
