1 EXPONENTS Today you will learn how to represent numbers using exponents. We will discuss vocabulary. We will discuss exponential form and evaluate expressions involving exponents. We will practice examples.

2 Vocabulary Word Definition factor
a number multiplied by another number to get a product. 2 x 3 = 6 (2 and 3 are factors of 6) exponent The number that indicates how many times the base is used as a factor. Example: 34 The exponent is 4. Meaning 3 x 3 x 3 x 3—multiply 3 four times. base When a number is raised to a power, the number that is used as a factor is the base. Example: 34 The base is 3. “Big, Base” power A number produced by raising the base to an exponent. 53 How we speak math: “5 raised to the third power” “The exponent has power over the base”

3 squared—when the exponent is a 2 you can say “squared”
Special Powers squared—when the exponent is a 2 you can say “squared” cubed—when the exponent is a 3 you can say “cubed” SPECIAL RULES!!!! Any base that is raised to the zero power always equals 1. Any base raised to the first power always equals the base.

4 Perfect square—you can take any number, square it, and find a perfect square
Examples:

5 Examples to try together:
Evaluate each expression. 2 to the 4th power 7 to the 0 power Write each expression in exponential form. 7x7x7x7x7 1x1x1x1 9x9x9 18x18

6 In case Dana’s school closes, a phone tree is used to contact each student’s family. The secretary calls 3 families. Then each of those families calls 3 other families, and so on. How many families will be notified during the 6th round of calls?

7 Examples to try on your own
Write each expression in exponential form. 8x8x8 7x7x7x7x7x7x7x7 3x3x3x3 Evaluate each expression. 1 to the 12th power 12 to the 1st power 789 to the zero power

8 One person will contact 4 people
One person will contact 4 people. Each of those will contact 4 other people, and so on. How many people will be contacted in the 5th round?
