Independent Prescribing
for approved practitioners
The University of Brighton offers programs of study in Independent Prescribing for nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, podiatrists and pharmacists. Practitioners who successfully complete the programme are eligible for annotation onto the relevant Professional Register as independent prescribers. At present we are expecting to have 30 HCKSS funded places for The deadline for applications is the last working day of March 2016, with interviews in April.
The program is run jointly by the School of Health Sciences and the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences enabling a large degree of multidisciplinary learning.
The program delivery is a blend of face-to-face educational input and the use of a dedicated on-line non-medical prescribing learning resource which will be available from January There are 10 days of workshops at the University of Brighton, attendance at which is compulsory. These are delivered in intensive blocks in February and March, with additional days in April and May. There is also a final day of attendance in June for the final examination. In addition there is a requirement of an equivalent of 12 days (90 hours minimum) supervised practice within the student’s identified area of practice. Completion of the programme, including the clinical learning elements, should normally be within a six-month period.
The program is assessed by multiple methods including in-clinic OSCEs, a final exam and the demonstration of competence using a practice based portfolio.
Nurses and other Allied Healthcare Professionals pathway
The program comprises of a three modules –
Pharmacology and Therapeutics for Prescribers (10 credits at level 6)
Health Assessment for Prescribing (10 credits at level 6):
Clinical and Professional Aspects of Prescribing (20 credits at level 7)
This programme will be mainly delivered at the Falmer campus
These modules can be taken as ‘stand-alone’ modules or can be included as part of an MSc in Physiotherapy or Podiatry with Independent Prescribing
