1 I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them my enemies
I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them my enemies. 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:22-24) Perfect Hatred Psalm 139:17-24 (READ) The Bible clearly reveals that God deals with wickedness. Eternal punishment is reserved for the wicked. (vs. 22) Hatred needs proper definition: (see verse 21, “loathe”, in other translations “grieved”) Strong – (loathe) detest, to be grieved by…. In effect, disapproval of, a desire to be separate from, refusal to associate with men of such character (Psalm 119:158), “I see the treacherous, and am disgusted, because they do not keep Your word.” (Psalm 1:1), “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.” In contrast, we have hatred as commonly understood by the world. It is destructive! (Proverbs 10:12), “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all sins.” Yet, Bible says there is a “time to hate,” (See below) What does this mean? (Ecclesiastes 3:8), [To everything there is a season], “A time to love, and a time to hate.” Bible speaks of hate in several ways: Relative preference, Luke 14:26, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.” Sinful attitude and conduct, Titus 3:3, “For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.” Express an aversion to evil, Hebrews 1:9, [God’s word’s concerning the Son], “You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions." The concept of hate is multi-faceted. Three important points to remember… Based on an outline by Joe Price (The Spirit’s Sword, 11/16)

2 Perfect Hatred We are to hate the same things God hates
Psalm 45:6-7; Proverbs 6:16-19 Perfect Hatred WE ARE TO HATE THE SAME THINGS GOD HATES! God Hates (abhor, loathe) Sin (Psalm 45:6-7), [This is the passage the Hebrew writer quotes in Hebrews 1:9 attributing it to the Son], “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions.” (Proverbs 6:16-19), [7 things the Lord hates]: 1) A proud look; 2) A lying tongue; 3) Hands that shed innocent blood; 4) A heart that devises wicked plans; 5) Feet that are swift in running to evil; 6) A false witness who speaks lies; 7) One who sows discord among brethren. There is a sense in which God Hates (has no pleasure in) the Sinner (Psalm 5:4-5), “For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with You. 5 The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity.” [Contrast with] (John 3:16), “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” So, there is a Time to Hate, and a sense in which hate is not only acceptable, but required by God!

3 Perfect Hatred We are to hate the same things God hates
Psalm 45:6-7; Proverbs 6:16-19 We must never hate others in return Matthew 7:12; Galatians 5:19-21; 1 John 2:9-11 Perfect Hatred ON THE OTHER HAND, WE MUST NEVER HATE (OR BE HATEFUL TOWARD) OTHERS IN RETURN  (Matthew 7:12), “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (1 Peter. 2:21-23), [Christ as example], “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: 22 "Who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth"; 23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously.” This kind of Hate is of the World (Galatians 5:19-21), “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” One Who has Sinful Hate toward Another Person (Instead, we should love!) (1 John 2:9-11), “He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.” (1 John 3:13-15), “Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.”

4 Perfect Hatred We are to hate the same things God hates
Psalm 45:6-7; Proverbs 6:16-19 We must never hate others in return Matthew 7:12; Galatians 5:19-21; 1 John 2:9-11 Christians do good to those who hate them Luke 6:27-28,22; Matthew 5:43-48; Romans 12:17-21 Perfect Hatred CHRISTIANS DO GOOD TO THOSE WHO HATE THEM, (Luke 6:27-28), “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.” [Contrast with the World’s response to God’s people] (22), “Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you, and revile you, and cast out your name as evil.” We do good, because God Does, (Matthew 5:43-48), “You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. ' 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” We Must Love the Evil Doer, Even When His Evil is Against Us, (see verse 44 above) God has Not Given Us the Right to Take Personal Vengeance on Evil (Romans 12:17-21), “Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. 20 Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.“ 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

5 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil
Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. (Romans 12:9) Conclusion Conclusion Hatred is a strong emotion that causes strong reactions of heart and deed. (Romans 12:9), "Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.” May we who love God overcome evil with Good!
