Berry and Fruit Production Creates Income in Rural Areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sanja Kahvedzić, Caritas Switzerland 4-6 November 2013

Goals Families in rural areas (unemployment up to 40%) have the ability to generate an income Migration of population from rural to urban areas is stopped, returnees are given an encouragement Choosing of raspberry production as a "leading" production -The success on the small-scale farms (they all have a land plot) -A large number of small producers are involved in the project Processor in the region (cool plants) create new jobs Export of berries brings to the B&H needed foreign money

Working with 3 components: 1. Organization of planting and purchase -Microcredit line (acceptable conditions, conditions of credit repayment are adjusted) -Contracts with the buyers -Procurement of quality planting materials and other equipment is organized 2. Provision of advisory services to the producers beginners and organization of training program 3. Organizing of the producers through the associations (SHO) Points 2/3 ensure the success

Association of producers Extension Service Individual contracts with the producers (Paid Services) Contracts with the international organizations Focus Region = Expanding of activities Focus Product = advising Extension Service is financed from the different sources Focus Training = different topics Contracts with the municipalities, cantons, state agencies Component 2: Establishment of privately-organized extension service

Association of producers Goal 1: Umbrella organization in B&H Extension Service Association of producers Further development : Goal 2: sustainable financing by producers and public institutions (Public-Private Partnership) Component 3: Establishment of umbrella organization of the berries producers

Results of the project : - More then 1000 producers were given a chance to take credit - More then 1100 producers are included in the training program - 135 ha of land were planted (90% with berries, 10% with other fruit) Season 2012: It has been estimated that the following was produced and sold on the market 2 000 tons of raspberries Total income 5000.000 KM (approx. 80% earnings of producers) -24 households provide the services of agro tourism -6 advisors work on the field (incl. agro tourism) -8 associations of producers
