And in a nation of more than 300 million people, it’s little wonder that those accents vary widely. More than a decade ago, Robert Delaney, a reference associate at Long Island University, put together this map of the 24 regions of American English:

- We drive on a parkway and park in a driveway.

- You have to wonder about language when your house may burn up as it burns down.
- How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy may be opposites?
- If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?
- A buck does funny things when the does are present.
