Reading instruction must be a major focus of Kindergarten through 3rd grade.
Third grade is the year that students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Students need strong reading skills in order to learn in all other school subjects, such as science, history, writing, and even math. 3rd Grade

3rd Grade – Reading & Writing Expectations
Reading Expectations – Students are expected to read fiction and non-fiction text on grade level. (Reading Levels N-Q= 3rd Grade Reading Level Range) Expanded Comprehension – thinking beyond the text Encourage your child to read at home (Literature Circle Book, Library Book, Journey Through the Genre Book) Writing – students are required to type their writing responses on the end of the year state test, which is calculated in and helps determine if they receive a passing score on the state test. 3rd Grade – Reading & Writing Expectations

Grading System Numerical grading system in 3rd Grade
Level of independence for the learner increases 3RD GRADE: 2ND GRADE: “A” – % Excellent (E) “B” – 89-80% Satisfactory (S) “C” – 79-70% Satisfactory (S) “D” – 69-60% Needs Improvement (N) “F” – 59% or below Unsatisfactory (U) Grading System

How do students promote to 4th Grade?
Promotion decisions are based on the following data: Final Language Arts grade (60 and above) Final Math grade (60 and above) Passing Score on Third Grade Gate (Performance Level 3, 4, or 5) How do students promote to 4th Grade?

Literacy-Based Promotion Act Purpose
The purpose of the Literacy-Based Promotion Act is to improve the reading skills of Kindergarten through 3rd grade public school students, so that every student completing 3rd grade reads at or above grade level.

Your child will take the following State assessments
ELA Writing Math Every public school third grader must take this assessment Test Given April 15 – April 26 The GATE score is taken from these 2 assessments combined to determine a passing score. Facts about the Test

Reading literature (fiction text) 12-13 multiple choice questions 4-5 open ended (manipulated responses) Reading informational text (non-fiction text) 4-6 open ended Language (vocabulary & word usage) 4 multiple choice questions 2 open ended Writing 1 (narrative, persuasive, or informative) What is on the test?
