Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries CFOI, Bureau of Labor Statistics
Decedents’ occupation, work environment, equipment involved in death, and the event are collected. Relies on records obtained from independent secondary sources (e.g: newspapers/ reports, death certificates, workers’ compensation). Cases are substantiated with two or more independent sources. Record fatalities by the state in which the accident occurred, not state of residence, while rate calculation is based on the state of residence.

Fatal Occupational Injuries Texas, 2006-2010
There were an average of 485 fatal occupational injuries based on data from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries. Nationally, there were an average of 5,109 fatal occupational injuries during the same time frame. Texas had the largest share of the fatal injuries when you analyze by state. In 2009, there was the lowest number of fatal occupational injuries nationally at 4,551 between 1992 and 2010. The largest group (40%) of fatal occupational injuries are due to transportation incidents (U.S. 39%). Over half of these are highway transportation incidents (67%). The next largest group of fatal occupational injuries are due to assaults & violent acts (16%, U.S. 18%). The majority of these are homicides (74%). Assaults & violent acts occur at greater percentages in women, self-employed, government workers, and the service providing industries. Goods producing industries have larger percentages of fatal occupational injuries due to contact with objects, falls, and exposure to harmful substances or environments than overall. The majority of goods producing fatalities are in the construction industry (56%). Service providing industries have larger percentages of fatal occupational injuries due to transportation incidents and assaults & violent acts than overall. The majority of service providing fatalities are in the trade, transportation, & utilities industry (57%). The majority of fatal occupational injuries are in males (94%, U.S. 92%). Occupational injury deaths broken out by race and ethnicity are similar to the overall population (52% non-Hispanic whites, 9% blacks, 36% Hispanic, and 3% Asian).

Fatal occupational injuries by industry ranked by counts show the construction industry has the highest number of fatal injuries. Fatal occupational injuries by industry ranked by rates show the mining industry has the highest rate of fatal occupational injuries. The mining industry includes oil and gas exploration and extraction. Using a scoring system based on counts and rates, the construction industry and the transportation & utilities industry have the highest score of fatal occupational injuries by industry.
