Road Map for Success: The New Deal (1933) The task before the Federal Government was a daunting one. It was 1933, the height of the Great Depression. Thousands of banks and businesses have failed, and a quarter of the adult population is out of work. A collapsed stock market and extremely high discontent among the American public lead the way for a new reformer to take charge. Who would bring relief to this ailing economy? Franklin Delano Roosevelt! Roosevelt took control of the Presidency in Unlike Hoover, he believed it was the Government’s responsibility to lead the American people out the depression by massively altering the manner in which Federal system established economic and social policies. Roosevelt and the Democratically dominated Congress established massive work relief programs to the most impoverished areas of the nation. A massive overhaul of our banking system provided the people with renewed faith and confidence in the economy. In addition to his economic and political reforms, Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor embarked on a campaign to provide rights and equal protection for many disenfranchised groups. This was a period of domestic recovery and renewed hope in the American way of life.
