Why education is important to you? What kind of college would be best for you? What degree or certificates you need for the career you want? What is the process to apply to college?

2 How to find a college There are a number of different search strategies to conduct for college research. Use online programs, like NCIS on the Legacy library website Check out websites Visit campuses Request information Talk to others to find out where they attended and what it was like

3 Things to think about when finding a college
Find a school that fits your needs. Does it offer the major or program you are interested in? Is it located in a climate you like? Snow? Sunshine? Big city or small town? How much is tuition? Do they offer financial aid and scholarships? Public or private? Large enrollment or small? Close to home or far away? Do they have sports? Are the classes small or large? Religious? What are the requirements for acceptance?

4 Types of degrees Certification – trade or technical school
Associates Degree – awarded by a community college or some trade schools, 2 years of school Bachelors Degree – four year degree from a college or university Masters Degree – two years over bachelors degree Doctorate Degree – degree above the masters degree

5 Careers Pathways Many jobs have specific ways of getting there.
A doctor, lawyer, cop, fire fighter, veterinarian, etc. These all have specific career paths they must follow. Without those paths they will never get there.

6 Career Pathways A doctor has to do years of schooling, go to a certain school, and do internships along with a veterinarian. A lawyer has to go to a certain school, get good grades and know the laws. A fire fighter has to do months of training, has to take many tests to even get to training and for cops it’s the same thing.

Go to and check it out as a class. Look at the “prospective student” section. Look over the due dates, application requirements, and special instructions. Check out and

9 What do you need? Do some research. What career are you interested in?
Does it require a certificate or degree to get into that career field? Is there a specific major or program you need to get that job? Who can you start working with or volunteering with to get experience in the career field you are interested in?

10 Keep your options open Don’t limit yourself by not continuing your education Volunteering can help you decide if you like that career or not Start thinking ahead and taking action now
