The New road to skills Stephen Murgatroyd, Phd CEO, Collaborative media group inc.

2 Why need to think differently about skills development…
Work is changing Automation Artificial intelligence New business models New skills for productivity

3 And… Demography of Canada is changing..
By 2030, 30% of Canadians will be over 60 years of age There will be 2 working age people in Canada for each retiree – down from 4:1 in 2015. GDP could fall by as much as 52% (McKinsey) More seniors than students in K-12 for the first time.

4 The nature of work is changing – the Uberization of work
By the year 2000 in Canada, app. 50% of the workforce were contingent workers – contracted for service rather than employees. Largest number of contingent workers are young people under the age of 35. Canada has the 3rd largest contingent workforce in the world behind New Zealand (#1) and the US (#2). By 2030 we anticipate that 65% of the Canadian workforce will be contingent Many over 65 also continue to work out of choice (some do so out of necessity)

5 LEARNING IS INTEGRATED INTO WORK NOT APART FROM IT…
Old career pathway New careers pathway Day care Elementary Junior high / high school Apprenticeship / college / university Job 1 in career 1 Job 2 in career 1 – small promotion Job 3 in career 1– small promotion Job 4 in career 1 – larger promotion retire Day care / elementary / tutor Junior high / high / self-taught Skills learning Career 1 Career 2 RETURN TO LEARN Career 3 Career 4 {REAPEAT OVER AND OVER}

6 What does this mean for skills based learning?

7 Skills based learning needs to be..
AVAILABLE ANYTIME, ANYWHERE TO ANYONE – AT WORK, AT HOME, VIA COLLEGES, VIA TUTORS, VIA workbased learning – learning needs to be everywhere FLEXIBLE, FAST AND EFFECTIVE MODULAR, STACKABLE AND PORTABLE ABOUT COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES – NOT ABOUT TIME or age FOCUSED ON WHAT SOMEONE CAN DO AND HOW THEY DO IT AND LESS ON CREDENTIALS MICRO-CREDIT AS IMPORTANT AS A RED SEAL, DIPLOMA OR CERTIFICATE EMPLOYERS WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU BRING TO THEIR ORGANIZATION IN TERMS OF “SOFT SKILLS” AS WELL AS HARD SKILLS

8 WE NEED TO MOVE TO SHORTER MODULES (2-3 WEEKS) DELIVERED FLEXIBLY
BASED ON COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT ON DEMAND MODULES SHOULD STACK FROM A BADGE TO AN APPLIED DOCTORATE

9 WE NEED TO RETHINK APPRENTICESHIP
ITS NOT ABOUT TIME, ITS ABOUT CAPABILITIES ITS NOT ABOUT RATIOS FOR SUPERVISION – ITS ABOUT MENTORING, COACHING AND GUIDING FOR SUCCESS IT IS ALSO ABOUT RECOGNIZING PRIOR LEARNING, WORKBASED LEARNING AND KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED FROM ANY SOURCE – ITS NOT ABOUT NAIT OR SAIT, ITS ABOUT CAPABILITY THE KEY ROLE FOR NAIT / SAIT AND OTHER PROVIDERS IS MENTORING, COACHING, GUIDING, ASSESSMENT – SOME TEACHING MAY BE REQUIRED

10 WE NEED EMPLOYEES TO HAVE THE LEGAL RIGHT TO ASK FOR TRAINING
EMPLOYERS INVESTING MORE IN TRAINING AND LEARNING MORE PROVIDERS OF LEARNING ASSESSMENT IS THE KEY – CAPABILITY BASED ASSESSMENT IS THE FUTURE

11 imagine Assessment of skills and competencies on demand
assessment leads to credentials All credentials are stackable – lifelong learning has momentum And all learning is transferable and recognized anywhere – forget geographical boundaries

12 Times are changing..

13 “THE FUTURE IS RARELY A STRAIGHT LINE FROM THE PAST….”
EXPECT THE NEXT CHALLENGE TO LEARNING TO BE A CURVEBALL!
