The Optic Nerve Head (ONH) is an anatomically complex region that is centrally involved in the pathogenesis of glaucoma and may also play an important role in Visual Impairment and Intracranial Pressure (VIIP) Syndrome, a condition hypothesized to be triggered by elevated intracranial pressure. Our lab studies the biomechanics and mechanobiology of the ONH. In this presentation I will describe direct experimental measurements of ONH biomechanics obtained using a new ex vivo imaging modality, phase-contrast micro-CT, and how such data complements numerical studies of ONH biomechanics in glaucoma and VIIP. I will also describe how these measurements have helped drive studies of optic nerve head blood flow and cell-culture based investigations of astrocyte mechanobiology.
