Preparing for the next school year

2. What is Running Start?
Running Start is a state-wide program that allows 11th and 12th grade student to take classes at community or technical colleges
Tuition is paid by the Running Start Program
Students earn both high school AND college credits
A 5-credit college class is equal to a 1-credit high school class

3. Who is eligible?
You must be in 11th or 12th grade while participating in the program
You must place in college level English (English 101) through the COMPASS assessment
You must meet program application deadlines

4. What are ADVANTAGES of the program?
Opportunity to take ADVANCED COURSEWORK
ADULT educational setting
FLEXIBILITY in scheduling classes
Dual Credit (high school & college)

5. Limitations of Enrollment
A student choosing to attend Running Start Full Time (i.e. no other classes at Hazen) is eligible for up to 15-credits per quarter.
A student choosing to attend Running Start Part Time has to “split” his/her allowable FTE:

6. IMPORTANT Considerations
Maturity is essential
Students pay for books, lab fees, etc.
Transportation is the student’s responsibility
College credit does not transfer to ALL colleges
Student is starting his/her COLLEGE GPA and continuing with your High School GPA!

7. IMPORTANT Considerations
Adult-learning environment
May miss out on school activities, announcements, etc.
The college academic schedule (quarters) doesn’t line up with the high school academic schedule (semesters)
You’ll need to plan on a full-year commitment

8. What makes a SUCCESSFUL Running Start Student?
Independent work ability
Maturity
Self-motivated/EXCELLENT study habits
Previous academic success
An interest in a program of study that isn’t taught at the high school

9. What should your parents know?
Most Running Start students see their GPA DROP when they take classes at the college
Parents will not have access to instructors, progress reports, attendance, etc.
Students are still responsible for meeting all Renton School District grad requirements
Students still need to complete a Culminating Project – Running Start students just have to complete this independently

10. Where do Hazen Running Start students go?
Most Hazen students choose Bellevue College (more academic choices):
Some choose Renton Technical College (more training program options):
But any community/technical college your student has transportation to is a possibility.

11. Steps to Enroll (Bellevue College) – beginning Feb. 19th
Create Login
Complete the BC Running Start Application (online) Receive your BC Student ID Number via
Register to take the COMPASS Assessment
Step 2:
Take the COMPASS Assessment during specified date/time ($21.50)
Upon completion of test and placement into English 101 (this is an eligibility requirement), notify High School Programs office

12. Steps to Enroll (Bellevue College)
Complete mandatory Pre-Orientation Running Start Program Information Online Course by May 7, 2014 (must receive 100% in order to move to next step)
Receive via New Student Orientation Registration information by May 15, 2014
Includes: Instructions to register online for mandatory New Student Orientation/Registration Sessions
Step 3.5: Complete and submit the Hazen Running Start Agreement form (with Parent Signature)found on the Hazen webpage: Counseling/Running Start
Step 4:
Complete the Running Start Verification Form with your school counselor

13. Steps to Enroll (Bellevue College)
Attend mandatory New Student Orientation/Registration Session where you will turn in your signed Verification Form
Every subsequent quarter:
Complete the RS Verification Form with your school counselor prior to registration

14. Bellevue College - RS Fall General Information Sessions
Held on the BC Campus, Room N201
Thursday, March 7 p.m.
Saturday, April 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m.
Saturday, April 9 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m.
