1 Concentration Calculation Review Solubility Curves

2 Evaluation/Assessment:
Objective: Today I will be able to: Calculate the molarity and dilution concentrations for a solution Analyze the effect of changing the temperature on the solubility of a compound Evaluation/Assessment: Informal Assessment – monitoring student interactions and questions as they complete the worksheets Formal Assessment – analyzing student responses to the worksheet and exit ticket Common Core Connection Make sense of problem and persevere in solving them Look for and make use of structure Use appropriate tools strategically

3 Lesson Sequence Evaluate: Warm-Up (5 minutes) Evaluate: Collect HW
Elaborate: Solutions Calculations Review 25 minutes Explain: Solubility Curves (5 minutes) Elaborate: Solubility Curve practice 15 minutes Evaluate: Exit Ticket

4 Warm - Up Describe how to prepare 150 ml of a 1.2 M HCl solution from a 4.0 M HCl stock solution.

5 Objectives Today I will be able to:
Calculate the molarity and dilution concentrations for a solution Analyze the effect of changing the temperature on the solubility of a compound

6 Homework Complete the solubility curve worksheet

7 Agenda Warm – Up Collect HW Concentration Practice
Solubility Curve Notes Solubility Curve Practice Exit Ticket

8 Concentration Calculation Practice
Complete the practice problems at your desk for 15 minutes. We will review the answers as a class

9 Think about: How does temperature affect solubility
Solubility Curves Think about: How does temperature affect solubility

10 Solubility of solids What effect does increasing the temperature have on the solubility of a solid? In general it increases Why? Molecules move around more rapidly to dissolve quicker

11 Solubility of gases Gas solubility decreases with temperature increase
Why does this happen? Molecules move faster, the gas particles escape the solution

12 To predict the quantity of solute that can dissolve at a given temperature, we use a Solubility Curve – Notes are in additional PPT

13 Solubility Curve Analysis
Complete the questions relating to the solubility curve. Ask Ms. Ose for help if you have questions

14 Exit Ticket Would an 60 gram solution of KCl be unsaturated, saturated or supersaturated at a temperature of 80 oC
