4 Safety on EU level European regulation and safety
The principal responsibility for regulation and safety of nuclear facilities is with national authorities Nuclear Safety Directive emphasised the fundamental principle of national responsibility for nuclear safety. An amendment to the directive from July 2014 introduces a high-level EU-wide nuclear safety objective that aims: to limit the consequences of a potential nuclear accident as well as to address the safety of the entire lifecycle of nuclear installations (siting, design, construction, commissioning, operation and decommissioning of nuclear plants), including on-site emergency preparedness and response
