2 Acknowledgements Project generously funded by the World Bank through the Trust Fund for Statistical Capacity Building. Of course, all Pacific NSOs for being here.

3 Project aims In response to HOPS 2017 call for increased dissemination of quality development data: Curation for long-term preservation of Pacific microdata data Metadata documentation to improve useability of data Publishing of metadata documentation to increase data discoverability Establishment of transparent legal and governance frameworks to ensure confidentiality and to establish confidence Standardisation (or harmonisation) of microdata to facilitate comparative (longitudinal and spatial) analysis Identify approaches for optimal approaches to sampling in small island states Build capacity of national statistical agencies in data documentation, standardisation and use, and in sampling methods Ancestory.com; a piece of history; build confidence in Pacific data

4 Three main components Establishing the Pacific Microdata Library
Harmonisation of census and survey datasets (ex-post standardisation) New sampling strategy for PICTs

5 Component 1: Establishing the Pacific Microdata Library
Legal framework Microdata inventory Acquisition of data and metadata Not transfer of ownership Establishment of policy and protocols data acquisition, evaluation, documentation, anonymization, cataloguing, dissemination, and preservation Setting up IT infrastructure Metadata documentation and dissemination Anonymization and preparation of public use files Citations database User engagement Capacity building Memorandum of Understanding Data Access Agreement Terms of Use

6 Component 2: Ex post microdata standardisation
Workshops on standardisation Labour market; disability; education; consumption Identify common household and person variables for thematic analysis Training in microdata standardisation and analysis Creation of census subsets Harmonisation guidelines Household record Person record Labour market Income Education Consumption Health ICT, etc.

7 Component 3: A new sampling strategy for small island states
Capacity building Identifying optimal sample design that accommodates varying data user needs HIES, DHS, MICS, disability, labour, agriculture Sampling guidelines
