3. By the late 1950’s television had replaced radio.
From 1939 to 1941 only 7000 TV sets had been purchased, well by 1959 the number of television sets had grown to 67 million.
TV had the same effect that the radio had on the previous generation.
Television was used for entertainment, news programming and creating a common national culture.

6. 1960 Presidential Debate
Presidential campaign between Richard Nixon (R) and John F. Kennedy (D)
Both agreed to hold four nationally televised presidential debates
Campaigns were similar but candidates were not.
Kennedy was young, tanned and clean-cut.
Nixon was older underweight after a recent illness and prone to excessive perspiration

7. Kennedy/Nixon Debate
1st debate was September TV accentuated every bit of physicality of the candidates.
74 million viewers watched the debate and gave Kennedy the debate victory.
Nation viewed Kennedy’s appearance as being more positive than Nixon’s. However, citizens who listened to it on the radio reported Nixon sounded more knowledgeable and experienced between the two.

Scientific researchers developed products that aided the health, welfare and economy of the United States.
New vaccines ended childhood diseases such as polio, measles and whooping cough.
The development of air conditioning led businesses and population to spread into the deep South and Southwest.
Communication satellites made long distance phone calls and imaging less expensive. These new satellites also improved the ability of weather forecasting to protect people from violent weather

9. WWII experiments in jet engines and jet aircraft led to new generation of aircraft that ultimately resulted in the growth of the airline industry.
By the 1970s, personal computers and rudimentary networks resembled the internet and a new way of communicating.
