2. Lead-ins There are 3 different types of lead-ins:
Somebody said lead-in
Blended lead-in
Sentence lead-in
The lead-in links the quotation to what surrounds it in the context of the paper. If the quote is just dropped in to a sentence with a proper lead-in it is called a dropped quote. Do NOT use dropped quotes in your writing.
Dropped quote example:
Leonato is a very caring person; he tries to make things happen in relationships. “Well niece, I hope to see you one day fitted with a husband (Shakespeare 20).

3. Somebody Says Lead-in
This type of lead-in is most frequently used, but be careful to not overuse it. The author’s name is used to introduce the quote.
Examples:
Jane M. Agee (2017) comments, “Many students who would not have attempted college even seven years ago are not coming into universities through junior colleges” (p.10).
The messenger says, “He hath borne himself beyond the promise of his age, doing in the figure of a lamb the feats of a lion” (Shakespeare 21).
(In a play, the somebody says lead-in should note the name of the speaker of the quote.)

4. Blended Lead-in
Blended lead-ins provide flexibility to the writer. The writer chooses the part of the quote necessary for his paper and blends it smoothly into the rest of the sentence.
Example:
State universities are serving a broader student population than ever before by admitting students from junior colleges and through “special remedial programs where students who do not meet entrance requirements are admitted on probation” (Agee, 2017, p.10).

5. Sentence Lead-in
A sentence lead-in is an effective lead-in where the sentence prior to the quote leads directly to the following sentence. It is almost an introduction to the quote.
Examples:
Agee (2017) insists that English instruction on the college level will not be improved until educations examine the situation realistically: “Public school teachers, professors of English Education, students, and state leaders need to sit down together and evaluate the current realities before any real progress can be made” (p.10).
Beatrice constantly looks down on Benedick and degrades him with her quick wit: “Scratching could not make it worse and it were such a face as yours were” (Shakespeare 14).

A transition is a word or phrase that helps the writer’s worlds flow more smoothly.

8. Creating Transition Sentences
Hillgrove High School consistently proves to be the most desired school to attend in Cobb County. For example, in % of Hillgrove students passed the graduation writing test. Because of the dedication of both students and teachers, the school has experienced a great deal of success in writing. Students practice these skills in each of their English courses, and teachers are diligent in the feedback they give students to help them improve their abilities. In addition to academic success, Hillgrove students also excel in atheltics. The Hillgrove Hawk football team has had a winning season for the last seven years….

9. Create your own transitions: Write a transition sentence that connects the 2 pieces of evidence.
1. Topic: Vacation spots
In interviews with families, 60% of people enjoy spending time at the beach for their family vacation.
The mountains provide a relaxing experience for those looking to get away from everyday stressors.
2. Topic: Homecoming events
The Homecoming Pep Rally introduces the athletes of the fall sports teams and includes the spirit stick competition.
The Homecoming football game is attended by 75% of the student body.
3. Topic: Shoes
The Adidas ZX Flux is the hottest selling shoe on the market.
The Jordan Black Infrared 6 will be released on Black Friday.

10. In-text Citations (APA)
Direct Quotes
According to Jones (1998), "Students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when it was their first time" (p. 199).
Jones (1998) found "students often had difficulty using APA style" (p. 199); what implications does this have for teachers?
She stated, "Students often had difficulty using APA style" (Jones, 1998, p. 199), but she did not offer an explanation as to why.

12. What needs to be fixed?
Lying is the easy way out of situations. In the article it states, “We certainly shade the truth to make it fit more comfortable into our lives.” Humans as a whole do this to make our lives throughout the day easier. With all the tings going on in the day, we choose to try and make things more fitting. Lying helps, but sometimes it might backfire. The author tries to show the readers that lying is happening more than you think. It’s easy, sometimes simple, and does the job so we can get away from something difficult that we may not want to deal with.

13. What needs to be fixed?
Lying is inevitable, but easily can destroy relationships. “Whether there’s nothing to hide or something real you’d rather they not know about, leaving out significant facts will make you feel shady and create a hotbed for further deceptions.” When the author says this, she is saying that these small lies can turn into major issues if unaddressed and continuous. It also talk about how lying to your significant other can make you, yourself, feel bad and secretive. Relationships are built on trust and open communication with one another and you can’t put everything out on the table. That relationship will not promote positivity and can eventually be very hurtful.
