Region 1 – Eleanor Baum Dear colleagues, I am the Region1 Educational Affairs coordinator. In that role, I will be writing to you periodically to suggest projects of an educational nature for your consideration. I hope that your section will be enthusiastic about undertaking some of them. My first suggestion deals with encouraging more high school students to consider careers in engineering. IEEE has a truly wonderful website called “Try Engineering” which answers questions that students, their teachers, or their parents may have about the engineering profession. The website is interactive, and really useful. However, most students do not know that it exists. After many years of outreach projects to this age group, I am convinced that the best way to get information to students is through their math and science teachers, not through overworked guidance offices. It would be great if your section would contact local school districts or boards of education and get addresses of all of the high schools in your area. I think that mailing addresses will be easier to obtain than e- mail addresses. Then, a letter from your IEEE section might be sent. Copies of this letter should be addressed to the chairperson of math, the chairperson of the science department, with copies to the guidance department and the librarian. The letter could inform the chair people about “Try Engineering”, offer to send speakers to Career Days or even to classroom presentations, and even offer help to teachers with engineering or science projects. A sample of such a letter is attached, but your letter should mention only those things that your section is willing to do. I truly feel that such an outreach project would be of interest to many of your members. I know that it will be a very positive step in publicizing the profession. Please contact me if you have questions. Certainly, I want to know if you have interest in this. Best regards, Eleanor Baum 4 1/11/2019

Sample of our new Student Newsletter in Region 3 as I mentioned in our meeting update. Subject: IEEE Region 3 Student Newsletter (September) Hello Region 3 IEEE student branch leaders, Most of you have not met me before, so I will quickly introduce myself. My name is Joshua Shank and I am your new regional student representative. I will be working with the regional committees (along with Dr. Hannemann our Regional Student Activities Chair) to ensure that student interests are thought of when planning for regional events, such as South East Con. I will also be working with the global student activities committee to plan how IEEE can serve students around the world. Finally, I hope to serve as a communications catalyst, helping to keep you informed of upcoming events and helping you communicate ideas to each other. My plan is to you on the first day of each month with information about upcoming events. We are also in the process of setting up a forum so that you can all post event ideas or ask questions about issues you may be having. If anyone has an idea or question, please feel free to me. The following is the details I have on upcoming events. IEEEXtreme 5.0: Date: 10/22/11 Date to Register: Early September Event: 24 hour Programming Competition Our Goal: have every IEEE student branch in region 3 compete with at least one team, and most schools competing with several teams. More Information: Miscellaneous: Consider asking your local branch for help in providing food to the competition teams. Local branches are often looking for ways to help support students in the region

Region 3 – Bruce Walcott IEEE Day: Date: 10/6/11 Event: Support IEEE awareness. Have an event. Ideas: Have a meeting. Watch IEEE promotional video Goal: Increase awareness of IEEE and what IEEE does amongst engineering students and the community. Many engineering students don't know what IEEE does. More Information: IEEE SmartTech Metro Area Workshop: Date: 11/4-5/11 Date to Register: 9/30/11 Cost: $99 for members Where: Huntsville Alabama Event: Two days of workshops on cutting edge technology. This is not just a student event, so it is also a chance to network with career engineers and potential employers. More Information: South East Con Date: 3/15-18/12 More Information: Miscellaneous: This event is still several months out, but is a large enough event that you may want to start promoting it early. Remember, this is the premier yearly event for networking, showing off your engineering skills, and of course having an awesome time. I look forward to working with you all over this next year. I wish you all a great new school year Joshua Shank Georgia Tech, Graduate Student IEEE, Region 3 Student Representative

Region 5 – John Meredith Section Revitalization Project
Electronic Media Project
10
Background This is a report on an MGA Section Revitalization project recently approved by MGA Project is to be carried out as pilot with two or three Sections in Region 5 Project supports SC recommendation 33 (Virtual Meetings) Project similar to one being conducted in Region 2
11
Summary This has been approved by MGA as a Region 5 Section revitalization project. The project will be conducted as a pilot to demonstrate the feasibility of recording and archiving voice annotated Section and Chapter presentations. The approach is to use a simple process with inexpensive tools to capture local presentations for viewing at a later date by geographically and time-challenged technical professionals. A local volunteer will supervise the recording and archiving process to ensure good quality. A modest investment (less than $1000 USD) will enable Sections to record presentations using Camtasia Studio presentation software installed on a notebook computer with a wireless microphone system. It is envisioned that there will ultimately be a clutter-free repository of appropriately catalogued presentations for use by IEEE members.
12
Electronic Access of Section and Chapter Presentations
Addresses revitalization of Sections and Chapters Assumes that interest level of current/potential members in technical and professional information (educational programs) is very high Initiative would provide electronic access to technical programs for those who cannot attend local meetings (access any time, any place) Plan is to conduct two or three pilot programs in Region 5 prior to end of year
13
What This Would Look Like
Add voice to electronic presentation given at Section of Chapter meeting using Camtasia Studio presentation software (this would not be video or real-time {webinar}; keep it simple) Archive presentations for later viewing on easy to access web site.
14
Details: local presentation
Hardware requirements Notebook computer with PC projector (required for local audience) Camtasia Studio software running on notebook computer linked to presentation software such as Power Point, web pages, etc. Wireless microphone system Local Section coordinator/facilitator (SCF) Ensures proper setup of system Coaches speaker and obtains signature release form Checks and edits presentation to ensure quality Archives presentation
15
Status and Plans Develop and obtain MGA plan approval (done)
Recruit two or three SCFs (Pete O’Neill, Ross Bogardus - Aug. 2011) Identify appropriate presentation software and wireless microphone system (Camtesia Studio; or Azden WMS-PRO); purchase software and microphone system. (Sep. 2011) FTF training workshop for SCFs. (Oct. 2011) Conduct pilot presentations; refine process. (Nov. 2011) Develop and implement a web-based repository system for presentations. (Jan. 2012) Expand program; share with other Regions; publicize (Jun. 2012)
16
System Details and Budget
Camtasia Studio presentation software $249 for single license Wireless microphone system TBD – one possibility is Azden WMS-PRO ~ $150 at Amazon: YouTube video at Notebook computer with Camtasia Studio installed – to be provided by SCF. PC projector used for local meeting – to be provided by Section Budget for pilot phase: $1060 for five Camtasia licenses $750 for five wireless microphone systems $600 for face-to-face training in Colorado $2410 total
