Elements and Compounds
Notes SPI Elements and Compounds Science Learning Intention: Classify common substances as elements or compounds. Purpose: to understand how elements bond together to form compound molecules. Success Criteria I will show that I understand this topic by earning a 90 or higher on the quiz. I Can Statement By the end of this unit I will be able to say... ...I can classify substances as an element or a compound.

Elements and Compounds
SPI Elements and Compounds Notes Science What Is An Element? Each individual element is a unique particle called an atom So in other words… elements are the different types of atoms An element is a pure substance that CANNOT be broken down into a simpler substance by CHEMICAL means. You CANNOT change one element into a different element during a chemical reaction. 3 Li Lithium 6.9 Example Lithium is an element. Here is a lithium atom.

Elements and Compounds
SPI Elements and Compounds Notes Science More About Elements The chemical symbols for elements always start with one capital letter Ex: B, C, N, O, F, etc. These chemical symbols can be followed by one (or more) lower case letters Ex: He, Li, Be, Mg, etc. Examples of Elements H hydrogen -represents one hydrogen atom Na sodium -represents one sodium atom Ca calcium -represents one calcium atom
4
Carbon, Hydrogen, & Oxygen
What is a Compound? Compound molecules are formed during chemical reactions two or more DIFFERENT elements that are chemically bonded via a chemical reaction to form a new substance. The properties of the new substance (product) are different from the substances (reactants) that you started with. Examples of Compounds NaCl (Sodium Chloride) Sodium and Chlorine CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) Carbon and Oxygen C6H12O6 (Glucose) Carbon, Hydrogen, & Oxygen

Elements and Compounds
SPI Elements and Compounds Notes Science More About Compounds Chemical formulas for compounds always contain more than one capital letter. This is how you can tell the difference between an element and a compound… count the number of capital letters! Examples of Compounds …note that it has more than 1 capital letter H2O This is the compound called water …note that it has more than 1 capital letter C12H22O11 This the compound called table sugar …note that it has more than 1 capital letter CH3COOH This is the acidic compound called vinegar

SPI Elements and Compounds Science Is this an element or a compound? Write a capital E if you think it is an element Write a capital C if you think it is a compound Cs (Cesium) Why?...is a pure substance, consists of only one type of atom How to tell?...It only has one capital letter! F.Y.I. Used to regulate the seconds in atomic clocks F.Y.I. Used for creating electricity from light in solar panels. Element
