2 Figure 1 Treatments that affect and interact with gut microbiota differently may lead to similar symptom response in patients with functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders (FGID). The effect of prebiotics on GI symptoms is most likely related to changes in microbiota composition and/or function, whereas the effect of a low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) diet seems to be related to the effect of the meal composition per se and diet–microbiota interactions and not directly to changes gut microbiota composition, even though changes in gut microbiota composition can be detected after a short period with a low FODMAP diet.
