Essential Question: How does energy change from one form to another?
Agenda Ram Bleat- Period 1 Only Bell Ringer Types of energy (Card Sort) Notes- Types of energy & energy transfer Types of Energy Card sort- address questions and misconceptions
2
Transferring Thermal Energy Topic 1 Lesson 2 & 3
3
Review Temperature is the measure of the total kinetic and potential energy in an object – a number value, use thermometer Heat- the transfer of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler object. Thermal expansion- all substances expand with heated and contract when cooled. Exception is water Different materials contract and expand at different rates The Law of Conservation of Energy: energy can not be created or destroyed, only transferred or changed from one form to another
4
Heat/ Energy is transferring around you all the time!!!
Heat transfer is: NOT random Transfers in one direction The energy Always moves from a warmer area to a cooler area.
5
Thermal energy is transferred from place to place by:
CONDUCTION transfer of thermal energy by collisions between particles in matter. CONVECTION transfer of thermal energy in a fluid by the movement of warmer and cooler fluid from place to place. RADIATION transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves.
6
occurs in solids, liquids, and gases.
Conduction occurs in solids, liquids, and gases. Examples: Convection occurs in fluids. Rising of warmer fluid and sinking of cooler fluid forms a convection current
7
Radiation The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves.
Does not require matter (can move through air…)
8
Energy Transformations
Sometimes, it is necessary to transform one type of energy into another to get work done. Write down 4 examples of your own.
