 BY 1914 only 1/3 of labour force still worked in agriculture. Germany led the world in steel, chemicals and electrical goods. Many people worked in these new and growing industries. Food imports rose quickly- 1/5th of Germany’s needs by 1914.
 Some saw much greater change than others. This varied on wealth and whether people moved to the growing industrial cities.   
 Social reform and Socialism
 Growing number of industrial workers led to demands for social reform such as old age pensions, sickness pay and accident insurance schemes (all 1889). By million Germans were covered by these schemes- inspired similar changes in Britain.
 The traditional elites disliked the changes but feared socialism.
For some of the workers the changes did not go far enough and there was growing support for the Social Democrat Party (SPD). Their socialist ideas came in part from the Communist ideology of Karl Marx. They won one-third of the Reichstag seats in 1912
