Tragedies– dramatic, usually end in death. Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet.
Comedies– lighthearted, lots of joking, usually end in marriage. Taming of the Shrew, Midsummer Night’s Dream
Histories—tell about a king or queen’s reign. King Henry VIII

10. Women in Renaissance England
The ideal woman is silent and mild.
Wives supposed to obey their husbands like subjects obey a prince.
A time of social upheaval.

11. Comprehension Strategies
Take your time– try to translate as you go.
Try creating descriptive names for the characters as you go; adjust them as you read.
Visualize the action.

12. Use the text notes as you go
They’ll clue you in on words we don’t use anymore.
They’ll help you realize when words have changed in meaning.

13. Sentence Order Shakespeare wrote using iambic pentameter.
Iambic pentameter= 10 syllables of alternating unstressed and stressed syllables.
Ex. Farewell, sweet masters both. I must be gone.

14. To Achieve Iambic Pentameter…
Sometimes subjects and verbs are reversed
Ex. “Full of vexation come I.”
Sometimes the object is put before the subject and the verb
Ex. “Him I hit”

15. Interrupters Characters often interrupt their own trains of thought.
“My fortunes every way as fair ranked (If not with vantage) as Demetrius’”

16. Wordplay
Puns– plays on words that sound the same but have different meaning.
Extended simile– what began as a simple simile is turned into a long, extended comparison using “like” or “as”
