Field Trips We are planning field trips to enhance your child's learning this year. The tentative trips will be to the Natural Science Center, to see A Christmas Carol, to Kersey Valley, to Kaleideum North, and Greensboro Grasshoppers.
3
Science and Social studies
Our science units of study are weather, matter, sound, and life cycles of animals. For social studies, we focus on citizenship. We also integrate other content through the reading curriculum and through Scholastic News.
4
Literacy In English language arts and literacy, we will be using the CKLA curriculum. In addition to stories, they will read more non-fiction texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas including science and social studies. They will read more challenging texts and be asked more questions that will require them to refer back to what they have read. There will also be an increased emphasis on building a strong vocabulary so that students can read and understand challenging material.
5
CKLA Skills We are using a new program that that emphasizes word study and word structure. This program will increase the students’ writing proficiency in spelling and grammar.
6
CKLA Listening and learning
Along with CKLA Skills, students will also be listening to oral read-alouds daily to enhance their listening comprehension skills. Students will also be increasing their working vocabulary and applying it to extension activities.

Reading Assessments Comprehension is measured by the TRC Assessment. This is given in the fall, winter, and spring. This is a one-on-one test in which the student reads a leveled book aloud to the teacher. Then he or she answers oral comprehension questions. Students are expected to come into second grade with a level I and progress to a level L/M. Fluency is measured by the DIBELS assessment. In this test, the student reads aloud for one minute while the teacher records how many words are read correctly. After reading, the student must give an oral summary as well. Students are expected to come into second grade reading 52 words per minute and progress to 87 words per minute.
8
Differentiated Literacy Groups
Once DIBELS/TRC testing is completed, students will be grouped into their instructional reading levels for DLG. Students will work on materials that are appropriate for their individual levels, such as: written/oral comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.

Eureka math In mathematics, second grade focuses on the fundamentals of math: Number sense, place value, computation, and solving problems. Eureka helps students to truly understand math, connect to the real world, and prepare them to solve problems they haven’t encountered before. The creators of Eureka Math believe that it’s not enough for student to know the process for solving a problem; they need to know why that process works.

How you can help your child at home
Complete the nightly homework with your child, including their math worksheets and spelling words. There is a homework helper that is sent with each math lesson– please use this guidance on their homework. Be sure that your child is reading for 30 minutes and completing the nightly reading log. Make sure your child has reading material that is fun and interesting to them. Be sure your child reads independently, reads with you, and hears you read to them. All of these are important to develop your child’s literacy. Finally, please double check that your child is completing the homework every week. If you have questions, or are not seeing work coming home, please us!
