1. Line Judge Tutorial For R1’s and Line Judges
R1’s Please Make Sure Game Management Provides chairs for the LJ’s to sit on in between sets

2. General Techniques
Hold the flag with both hands in front of your body, parallel to the floor
Move your feet to get a good view of the action
To look for a touch at the net, focus on the blocker’s fingertips
Make the call with a crisp, confident signal
Maintain the signal until the R1 awards the point
Between points avoid behaviors and body language that might appear too relaxed…avoid slouching and playing with flag

3. During Match
You are responsible for “in/out” decisions involving the end line and the entire sideline that intersect at your corner, even the obvious decisions.
Do not signal “in” or “out” when the ball lands near the sideline or end line that are the responsibility of the other line judge. When the R1 looks at the non-signaling line judge they are looking to see if you have a “touch”. If you don’t have a “touch”, just make eye contact with the R1 to let them know you have no information for them.

4. During the Match
Line judges must assist the referees in determining whether a player manages to keep a ball in play when it is very close to touching the floor. (Pancakes)

5. Touches
Remember, use a touch signal only after a referee’s whistle ends a play.
When you see a touch off a player on your side of the court, be prepared to signal immediately if the ball then lands out of bounds on the same side of the net.
DO NOT SIGNAL TOUCH if the rally continues or if the ball lands “in” near one of the lines you are judging.
If you see a touch signal it immediately.
If you do not see a touch make eye contact with the R1 even though you do not signal.

6. Touches
Either LJ can call a touch by either team anywhere in the playing area.
DO NOT SIGNAL a touch just because the other LJ does.
Only signal touches you actually see.

7. Time Outs
During a timeout, both LJ’s go to the intersection of the attack line and the sideline on the R1’s side of the court.
To move to that position, both LJ’s quickly roll up their flags.
LJ1 (on R1’s side) waits as LJ2 (R2’s side) walks along the end line. As LJ2 turns the corner, both LJ’s walk up the sideline to the TO position.
LJ of the serving team should be holding the ball during the TO.

8. Time Outs
Both LJ’s return to their base position at the same time when the R2 blows the warning whistle or the TO ends early

9. Post Set Responsibilities
At the end of the set gather the game ball and go to the TO position near the ref stand.
Wait until the teams have changed playing areas and then walk across the court to return the balls to the scorer’s table.
