1
Plate Tectonics Objectives:
Explore the process of tectonic plate movement by describing and drawing the causes of plate movement and comparing it to the evidence found. Think critically by analyzing the evidence for continental drift theory for the purpose of evaluating evidence to support a claim.
2
Types of Boundaries Three basic types
Convergent Divergent Transform Each type has unique features that help to identify it Earthquakes Volcanoes Topography Sea Floor
3
Convergent boundaries
Place where two plates are crashing together Features depend on type of plates colliding Oceanic-oceanic Continental-oceanic Continental-continental
4
Oceanic-oceanic
5
Example: The Aleutian Arc
Shallow earthquakes near boundary, with deeper earthquakes as you move towards islands or inland, ocean trench at boundary with island arc near boundary, high volcanic activity on inland or island side of boundary, varied age of ocean floor along boundary
6
Oceanic-continental
7
Example: Chile Shallow earthquakes near boundary, with deeper earthquakes as you move inland, ocean trench at boundary with mountain ranges / high elevation on land side of boundary, high volcanic activity on inland or island side of boundary, varied age of ocean floor along boundary
8
Continental-continental
9
Example: Himalayas Shallow scattered earthquakes on the side of the boundary with high elevation – mountains and high plateau, low elevation on side of the boundary with low seismic activity, scattered volcanic activity, no ocean floor data
10
Divergent boundaries
11
Example: Mid Atlantic Ridge
Shallow earthquakes along boundary, underwater mountain range along boundary, little bit of scattered volcanic activity around boundary, new ocean floor along boundary
12
Variation of Divergent boundaries
13
Transform boundaries
14
Example: San Andreas Fault
Shallow earthquakes on both sides of the boundary, a lot of scattered volcanic activity, no trenches, varied ocean floor age
15
Science Literacy: Continental Drift Reading
On the Move: Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics by Jim Cornish Read the article and be answer questions
16
Continental Drift Continental drift song from Ice Age animation of continental drift past and future animation of continenta drift past to present – globe instead of map
17
Puzzle it together Use the evidence of fossils and mountains to create a possible past “super-continent” Label each continent by its name Color each legend and matching mountains or fossils Cut out the continents Piece the continents back together Determine evidence and support by completing the “Analyzing Evidence” worksheet
18
Evidence to support continental drift
What was Wegener’s first piece of evidence leading to continental drift theory? South America’s fit with Africa What other evidence supports the theory of continental drift? Rock formation Fossils Ancient climates Ancient ice sheets
