Heat and Temperature
2
Heat vs Temperature Energy Transfer as Heat
Heat = energy transferred from one object to another because of a difference in the objects’ temperature. Temperature = measure of the avg. kinetic energy of the individual atoms or molecules in a substance (more movement = warmer temperature)
3
Energy Transfer as Heat
Three mechanisms of energy transfer as heat are: conduction, convection, radiation Fig 9 pg. 483: A pot of water on the campfire illustrates the 3 mechanisms of heat transfer
4
Conduction: the transfer of heat through matter by molecular activity.
***Think “Direct Contact”
5
2. Convection: the transfer of heat by mass movement or circulation within a substance.
***Think “Hot stuff goes up and cold stuff goes down” WHY??????
6
3. Radiation: the transfer of energy (heat) through the vacuum of space by electromagnetic waves that travel out in all directions. (this is how solar radiation reaches Earth) *** Think “Heat spreading out”
7
What Happens to Solar Radiation?
When radiation strikes an object, there usually are 3 different results: 1. Absorbed: (Converted to heat = temp. increase). 2. Transmitted: Energy passes through. During this, energy can be scattered, producing a large number of weaker rays 3. Reflected: Some radiation may bounce off the object without being absorbed or transmitted. Reflected radiation has the same intensity as incoming radiation Solar Cookers !!! Explain why these work!!
