Do Now Find your Assigned Seat Pick up a file card and a student handbook, and Verification sheet. Then complete a contact card with the following information: Your name: Your Preferred address: Mom’s Name: Mom’s best contact phone number and time: Mom’s Dad’s Name: Dad’s best contact phone number and time: Dad’s Albert’s Life Lesson for August Show me your digital or hard copy of the Syllabus. Today: About the course and Chemistry, in general

Objectives and Agenda Assignment:
Student Handbook, 1) Schedules 2) Conduct and Open Campus 8) Attendance Course Overview Objectives Know how the units of the course for the year are organized Know how the course will be evaluated Know how the class time and activities will generally proceed Know the behavioral expectations for the course and the corresponding consequences, including how absences are handled. Agenda Review syllabus Learning models and Chemistry overview (if time allows) Assignment: Syllabus Verification, signed by you and a parent/guardian due by Aug 20/21

The Learning Curve How we Learn Don’t know Know Think 2)
Can identify what you don’t know Scanning provides this information Uncomfortable or exciting Ready to learn Goal setting 3) Know it when you think about it Educated Practice helps 2 3 Requires work/energy Use it or lose it Pride of accomplishment Don’t think 1) You don’t know what you don’t know Ignorance is bliss 4) Know it, even if you don’t think about it Mastery Like riding a bike, or reading Hard to unlearn or forget Changes who you are (even physically)

What you know or can do alone
The Reach What you know or can do alone You with help The great unknown What all humankind knows or can do The Reach

Understanding Chemistry
Chemistry is the scientific study of matter, its properties, and its behavior. Intro to chemistry video Conceptual levels Macroscopic Atomic / Submicroscopic Theoretical Communication methods Symbols Names Measurements / Math When studying chemistry, keep in mind what type of understanding is involved.
6
Macroscopic Everything around you, including you, consists of chemicals Observable and measurable. Laws are statements that summarize what we have observed. Ex: Law of Conservation of Mass
7
Atomic Fundamental material nature of everything.
Not easily observable, but can be observed using a Scanning Tunneling Microscope Usually think about conceptually, based on theories.
8
Theoretical Theories are ideas that help us explain why things happen at the atomic or macroscopic scale and predict future possible observations. Ex: Atomic Theory Ex: Quantum Mechanics Ex: Theory of relativity More or less well founded, but always falsifiable and open to reinterpretation These three theories are so well founded that they are considered nearly factual.
9
Symbolic Au NaHCO3 CH3COOH
Different letter(s) represent different atoms Combinations of letters represent compounds and/or molecules SAME SYMBOLS REFER TO BOTH MACROSCOPIC AND ATOMIC SCALES
10
Names Common Names: Baking Soda Vinegar
Chemical Nomenclature: Sodium bicarbonate Acetic Acid
11
Mathematical Using math to measure quantities and describe relationships Macroscopic quantities can be measured Atomic quantities can be calculated Theoretical relationships between quantities can be modeled with equations and algebraic formulas

13
Some pretty amazing chemistry
Precipitation Black snake reaction Thermite reaction that was used to solder together railroad ties. FFF7 An explosive reaction. Chemiluminescence

Today’s Assignment What’s Due? (Pending assignments to complete.)
Syllabus Verification, signed by you and a parent/guardian due by Aug 20/21. What’s Next? (How to prepare for the next day) We will finish the introduction to chemistry and do safety training. You must attend and complete safety training and sign a safety contract or you will not be allowed to participate in laboratory activities and will receive a zero for all lab reports.
