8 Writing Journeys Writing Program Write from the Beginning
We utilize the writing process (create a pre-write, rough draft, and final draft.) We use Write from the Beginning to supplement our Journeys writing program. WFTB incorporates Thinking Maps to help organize writing. We focus on the Six Traits of Writing. Narratives- We create narratives using the elements of a story: characters, setting, dialogue, plot, sensory details, clear/descriptive language, and a sequencing of events.

9 Writing Descriptive Writing- Using descriptive language enhances your writing and engages the reader. This may include poetry, figurative language, descriptive words, and choosing the appropriate words to describe. Letter Writing and Functional Writing- Writing is a form of communication. This may include friendly letters, business letters, persuasive writing, thank you notes, messages, invitations, directions, labels, procedures, rubrics, recipes, graphs and tables. Provide Text Evidence- Using text to support writing-be able to support ideas through text evidence in our own words.

10 Writing Expository Writing- There are many forms of writing to provide information to an audience. This may include summaries, essays, newspaper articles, reflective logs, and journal writing. Research Reports- We use prior knowledge, paraphrasing, and particular research materials to provide information to a designated audience. We create research notes from a variety of sources, cite our sources, follow the writing process, use the Six Traits of Writing, and create a presentation for our intended audiences.

15 In the Spring of 2018, after careful, systematic review of multiple publishers and programs, the Math Curriculum Committee recommended the adoption of McGraw-Hill’s My Math and Redbird programs for Kindergarten through 5th grade. In May, the HUSD Governing Board approved the adoption. Teachers were provided with Initial Implementation training on May 25th, where they were provided with resources and tools to begin planning for the school year. Throughout the summer, Math Curriculum Development teams worked with our District Math Instructional coach to ensure the program alignment to the AZ Mathematics Standards and ensure that our students in HUSD would be receiving the most rigorous, relevant math instruction to continue our journey toward success and achievement by creating mathematically proficient students. Additionally, for the school year, all students K-5 will have access to Redbird Mathematics, an online adaptive tool that will allow students to progress through applicable, adaptive content at their own pace.

16 McGraw-Hill My Math will challenge our students in a way that inspires them to embrace the power of mathematics through real-world applications and experience just how fun math success can be. By weaving the three components of rigor—conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application—throughout the student edition and program, McGraw-Hill My Math enables our students to progress toward a higher level of achievement and steadily grow their math confidence.

17 No two students learn alike, no two teachers teach alike!
Three levels of differentiated instruction exist at every lesson in the Teacher Edition for Response to Intervention (RtI) Tiers 1 and 2 and Extend and Enrich for Beyond Level students. Drawing on performance data from student assessments and activities, the Data Dashboard our teachers will have access to enables immediate, leveled re-teaching and targeted activities, assists in grouping students automatically and recommends differentiated lessons. Additionally, the dashboard reports results at the individual, class, and district levels, tracking progress in content standards.

18 My Math enables our students to progress toward a higher level of achievement and steadily grow their math confidence. Chapter projects provide students with an opportunity to apply mathematical thinking to a real life situation. Each chapter of Instruction begins with the introduction of a new project and will be visited through the chapter. Problem Solving activities promote student exploration of mathematical concepts through connections to real-world situations and an opportunity to extend their knowledge and critical thinking skills by answering multi-step, complex question sets. Performance tasks prepare students for college and career readiness through in-depth, real world problems requiring multi-step, critical thinking and integration of mathematical concepts. Performance tasks are included with each chapter of instruction.

19 My Math will provide numerous resources to help our students in Higley continue to perform above state averages in math. Through interactive presentations with daily instruction, providing hands-on and digital manipulatives, literacy connections, online games and learning stations to incorporate into daily instruction, our students will be exposed to rigorous, standards-based instruction, driven by data and individual need of each and every student. My Learning Stations are filled with fun, ready-made math activities, games, and Real-World Problem Solving readers, offering all learners the chance to access the text and gain appropriate understanding. Interactive pre-made lesson presentations can be rearranged and customized to align to the needs of every student in a classroom. Digital eTools are embedded at point-of-use to allow for an interactive presentation.

20 McGraw-Hill My Math offers meaningful student engagement opportunities and a variety of resources designed to make a lasting impression on your students while allowing them to interact with math their way. Engagement through: ▪ Talk Math, Vocabulary Cards, Foldables® ▪ Real-World Problem Solving ▪ Digital Resources ▪ Hands-On Resources Students engage with math through multiple modalities. McGraw-Hill My Math offers visual/spatial, kinesthetic, aural, verbal, and social learning opportunities. Hands-on visual vocabulary cards, digital games, and each chapter’s Essential Question help students relate math to their own learning style. The content of My Math is available 100% hard copy and 100% online, allowing home-school connections to be seamless.

Addresses critical foundations for Algebra readiness Personalized learning backed by decades of research at Stanford Proven effective for all learners Includes STEM component This year all students in Higley district will have access to Redbird Mathematics online. Redbird is a K–7 personalized learning program, designed to meet the requirements of national and state math standards. Focus is achieved through an emphasis on the major criteria. Coherence is developed by illuminating connections between concepts and utilizing mathematical structure. The three components of rigor—conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and applications—are integrated into the learning experience. Understanding is developed through initial instruction and honed through problem solving. Procedural skill initiates with instruction and fluency is achieved through plenty of practice, including engaging, on- going games. Applications appear throughout courses, in the form of contextualized problems and STEM projects. Additionally, rich STEM projects, career pathways, and contextualized problems inspire students to develop a love of mathematics and connections to the real world. To actively support teachers, Redbird Mathematics provides recommendations for instructional groups and intervention needs based on keystroke level data from students’ work in the program.
