4 Punic Wars Wars between Carthage and Rome.
Carthage- Phoenician city in Africa. Controlled most of N. Africa and Spain

5 Rome expanded into lands around Carthage.
Romans copied Carthaginian warships. Put a corvus, or movable bridge, onto each ship. 1st Punic War ( B.C.E.)- Romans defeated the Carthaginians.

6 2nd Punic War ( B.C.E.) Carthage led by General Hannibal Barca. Attacked Rome from the north, marched through Spain, Gaul (France), and over the Alps into Italy.

7 Used elephants to break Roman lines.

8 Fought their way to Rome but couldn’t get through the cities walls.
Roamed Italian countryside for 15 years destroying towns and crops. Romans attacked Carthage Hannibal lost battle at Zama. Rome given money, Spain, and natural resources.

9 Carthaginians killed or sold into slavery.
