AGE STRUCTURE The average forest age is over 60 years
Stands representing age classes III and IV prevail in the forest structure and cover 24.9% and 19.4% of the forest area The number of tree stands aged over 80 years is rising

There are about 64,000 entities dealing with wood processing, more than 40% are furniture companies ths. t The wood industry accounts for 2 % of GDP annually Poland occupies the 5th place in the world in terms of furniture export

FRL according to the LULUCF Regulation
Article 8(5) As defined in the LULUCF Regulation, the FRL “shall be based on the continuation of sustainable forest management practice, as documented in the period from 2000 to 2009 with regard to dynamic age-related forest characteristics in national forests, using the best available data”. EXCLUDE THE FUTER IMPACT OF POLICIES AND MARKETS DISORDERED AGE CLASSES STRUCTURE STANDS ON AGRICULTURAL LAND CLIMATE CHANGE PROBLEMS The third one is: EXCLUDE THE FUTER IMPACT OF POLICIES AND MARKETS PROBLEMS Comparing with the historical period , our approach to the use of forests has changed. Disordered age classes structure resulting from afforestation and renewals after World War II. The trees planted after the War are at the age of 80 at present. They simply come into the cutting age. We have in Poland about 2,5 mln ha of the stands on agricultural land. So these forests have been planted on rather poor soils. This is also related to the insects and fungi gradations. It needs tim untill the soil is better. Climate change We do note the climate change in our forests. Drought and catastrophic phenomena, insect gradations will also require a reaction/change of approach and the use of appropriate measures. We will need to rebuild the stands. The dominant forest forming species in Poland are pine and spruce. There is a need to introduce more broad-leaved species. Natural disturbances, also related to the climate change: As you may know, last year in August we have faced the bigest windstorm disaster in the history of the State Forests A strong hurricane wind brought down thousands of trees. 79,7 thousand ha of the stree stands, Including 39,2 thousand ha to a complete renewal THE CONSEQUENCE OF ALL THIS IS THE NECESSITY TO INCREASE HARVEST INTENSITY. What happens in Poland in principle after We are afraid that because of the the LULUCF Regulation the long term sustaiability of harvest will be disordered Extra harvest above FRL do not necessarily leads to LULUCF debits: it may be compensated by extra increment (But this is something we do not know yet. It might be that our fears are exagereted.)
