Verbal Irony A character says one thing but means the opposite Also known as sarcasm or being sarcastic. Examples Exam time? My favourite time of the year! Who doesn’t love liver and onions?

Dramatic Irony Example
When the audience understands more about the events of a story than a character. It is as though the author is letting us in on a secret! Example Francine writes a love poem to Andrew, but we know that Andrew loves Sarah. Mom and Dad think the dog ate all of the birthday cake, but we know that Harry ate it.

Situational Irony When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected. Example That butcher is a vegetarian. Celine Dion never did enjoy the movie The Titanic.

Task: Spot the Irony Watch Alanis Morisette’s 1995 hit song, “Ironic” and find 2-3 true ironies within the song. Morisette’s song has been portrayed as a list of ironies, but when closely investigated, there are actually very few.
