Vocabulary Appeasement Policy of giving into the demands of an aggressor in order to keep the peace. ( BM ?) Pacifism Opposition and disgust toward war. Countries do whatever it takes to keep the peace Annex -To take or add territory Axis Powers- - Germany, Italy, & Japan form an alliance fight communism, not to interfere with each others territorial expansion Nazi-Soviet Pact – agreement not to fight if the others went to war & divide up Poland & other eastern Europe between them

In 1933, Hitler became the Chancellor of Germany and began his conquest in Europe. In Italy, dictator Benito Mussolini, made similar plans to control the Mediterranean and Africa.

Expansion through war. 1935, Italy invades Ethiopia 1937, Japan invades the rest of China Hitler’s builds up military (violation of Treaty of Versailles) Takes back Rhineland near France (no one stops him) Anschluss (Union of Austria and Germany) He invades Austria in 1938 No one tries to stop him (see a patern)

Why didn’t France or Great Britain try to stop Hitler, or Mussolini?
Appeasement: Trying to Keep the Peace France didn’t want to mess with Hitler without Great Britain British thought Hitler had a right to violate the Treaty of Versailles. Great Depression Countries were too weak to fight

GB and France asked the USSR for help. Problem
Stalin had signed the Nazi-Soviet Pact with Hitler in (allowed Germany to invade Poland w/ out opposition BM?) Agreement between Germany and USSR not to fight and to divide territories. Very smart move by Hitler
