1 African Americans in Paris Spring Break Course

2 My Contact Info and Bio Dr. Austin, 104 Walker Hall, Director of the African American Studies Program and Professor of Political Science UF Professor since 2001 Sixth time teaching the African Americans in Paris class Conversational French Teaching and research interests in minority politics, American government, public policy, and African American Studies.

3 The Cost ($2,800 for Undergraduates) Includes:
Round-trip travel from the Charles de Gaulle airport to the hotel Accommodations at a three-star Parisian hotel (Le Ibis Bercy) Breakfast daily, a welcome and farewell dinner A subway pass Tickets to all sites An on-site orientation Pre-departure materials Computer and internet access at the hotel and API Center

4 Does Not Include: Airfare Luggage fees Medical and life insurance
Personal expenses (passport fees, spending money, most meals) You will need a passport, but not a visa. You do not have to speak French I will meet with the students at least once before we leave to assist with flight arrangements, get your contact information, and provide information about things you’ll need to take.

6 The Class Consists Of: Two online lectures (about 10 minutes each) from our youtube page. Online documentaries and films ( minutes each) One Textbook: African Americans in the City of Light by Tyler Stovall 4 or 5 papers (depending on whether you receive 2 or 3 credits) Four are 3-4 pages each for students getting 2 credits. Students receiving 3 credits must write an addition 8-12 page paper that is due before the spring semester ends.

7 Tentative Itinerary in Paris
Sunday– Arrival and hotel check-in, orientation, dinner. A mini van will meet us at the airport and take us to the hotel. Monday– Breakfast, 3 hour Black Paris bus tour, lunch, Afternoon walking tour of the Goutte d’Or neighborhood, dinner on your own, Chocolat movie [ biopic-in-france-stirs-a-discussion-about-race.html]. Tuesday – Breakfast, Day trip to Nantes, France (lecture and tour of slavery museum)

8 Continued Wednesday March 8 – Breakfast, Visit to Josephine Baker’s home, lunch in St. Germain, Visit to the Chateau de Monte Cristo. Dinner and free evening. Thursday March 9 – Free Travel Day Friday March 10 – Breakfast, Black art tour at the Louvre, lunch, Boat cruise of River Seine, farewell dinner Saturday March 11 – Breakfast, Tour of Paris Parliament, lunch Tour of Versailles Palace. Some students have visited Disneyland Paris on this day. Sunday March 12 – Departure. A minivan will take us to the airport.

9 Other Things Let me know if you’d like to go to Paris early or stay later than Sunday so that we can arrange for you to stay at the hotel. We’ll meet again before the semester ends and again when the spring semester begins.
