3
Matter is Anything that has Mass or Volume …
Mass- amount of matter in an object Volume- Amount of space an object takes up
4
All Matter Can Be Classified As…
Elements Compounds Mixtures
5
All Matter Can Be Classified As…
Elements- simplest form of a pure substance Cannot be physically or chemically broken down Compounds- pure substances that are made up of 2 or more elements Can be chemically broken down
6
What are pure substances?
Contain a fixed composition For Example: composed of only 1 element or 1 compound Always considered homogeneous.
7
All Matter Can Be Classified As…
Mixtures- two or more substances that ARE NOT chemically combined. Can be physically separated Retain individual properties
8
Two Types of Mixtures Heterogeneous Mixtures-
2 or more physically combined substances (elements/compounds) Substances are not evenly distributed; thus, it is not considered uniformed.
9
Two Types of Mixtures Homogeneous Mixtures-
Substances are evenly distributed; thus, it is considered uniformed. Solutions– is a special example of a mixture where one substance dissolves into another.
