Unpack the prompt: What are Beowulf’s character traits? Strong, brave, courageous… Name other heroes you know about. What traits do they have? Odysseus in The Odyssey; Batman; Superman… Sample response: Answers will vary. Beowulf is strong and brave. Prompt C: How are the exiles of the three speakers in the poems from The Exeter Book similar and different? THIS LESSON WAS DROPPED FROM YOUR READING. PLEASE LEAVE THIS ANSWER BLANK ON YOUR TEST. YOU WILL NOT LOSE ANY POINTS FOR DOING THIS! Sample response: The three speakers have been separated from loved ones, but the circumstances of the separation are different. The seafarer has been separated by years and by the fact that he lives his life alone upon the sea. The wanderer has been separated by his kinsmen because they are all dead. The wife is alone because her husband has sent her away. All three speakers are wandering alone, without direction.
21
Prompt D: In "The Seafarer," the speaker displays an ambivalent attitude toward life at sea. On the one hand, he is fascinated by it; on the other, he is terrified. Scholars have interpreted the sea as a representation of the human existence. What is your opinion about this interpretation? THIS LESSON WAS DROPPED FROM YOUR READING. PLEASE LEAVE THIS ANSWER BLANK ON YOUR TEST. YOU WILL NOT LOSE ANY POINTS FOR DOING THIS! Sample response: I agree that the sea can be interpreted as a representation of the human existence. In a way, the difficulties that sea life presents can be as harsh and unpredictable as the problems that inevitably affect a person’s life. Yet, even if human existence can be filled with sorrow and tragedy, people long to experience life at its fullest, and they look for strong emotions and experiences despite the risk of getting hurt. In the same way, the speaker of “The Seafarer” knows that sea life is dangerous, but cannot help going back to it to experience its unique thrills and beauty.
