How does the writer use language to describe Jack’s experience of going outside?
Ma says it’s time to try going Outside again. “If we stay indoors all the time, it’s like we never did our Great Escape at all.” She’s sounding cranky, she’s trying her laces already. After my hats and shades and shoes, I’m tired again. Ma lets me revolve the door rapidly five times. She pushes and we’re out. It’s so bright, I think I’m going to scream. Then my shades are drowning in darkness and I can’t see. The air smells toxic and makes my nose ache. My neck is suddenly tightening. “Pretending you’re watching this on TV” the nurse says in my ear. I’m squishing the green spikes under my shoes. I bend down and rub them, it doesn’t cut my fingers, instead it tickles my palms. The grass is an emerald sea and I feel like I’m drowning in it. I stare at it and see a twig and a leaf. The leaf is yellow. The air. That air again it tastes awful. My neck tightens again. The sun’s rays are strong and beam through my sunglasses. I feel like my skin is viciously sizzling everywhere.
