Manifestos
2
What is a Manifesto? In Pairs, come up with your own definition of what you think a manifesto is
3
Manifesto A public declaration of policy and aims, especially one issued before an election by a political party or candidate
4
What should you include in a manifesto?
5
Include A little About yourself What you want to do if elected?
Realistic and achievable goals Relevant to position you are running for What changes you may wish to make? What your values are What your views are on relevant issues reflecting your School, University and the HE sector in general Some people like to include a short snappy slogan as part of their manifesto and campaign in general A slogan? ‘yes we can’ ‘Make America Great again’ ‘Take back control’ ‘better together’ There is a fine line though between an election campaign and an advertising campaign so you need to think how any slogan may be received.
6
What should you avoid Talking about your opponents – it should be about you Discrediting and disrespecting others? Why? (doesn’t look good to voters) Difficult to read font and too small text Don’t make too long – one side of A4 is fine. Don’t got over the 500 word limit
7
Some example manifestos
Have a look at the various manifestos being handed round. Work together in small groups, have a chat about the manifestos you have in front of you. Pick three good points about the manifestos? Pick three poor points about the manifestos? What are you three top tips for writing a good manifesto?
