4. King James gives a speech to Parliament. They are less than impressed
“The state of Monarchy is the supremest thing upon earth; for kings are not only God’s lieutenants upon earth and sit upon God’s throne, but even by God himself are called gods…..Kings are justly called gods for that they exercise a manner or resemblance of Divine power on earth… And to the King is due both the affection of the soul and the service of the body of his subjects

Begins in 1642, when Charles I leads troops into the House of Commons during the Long Parliament
Fought between Kings Charles I and Parliament
Cavaliers – supported the King
Roundheads – Puritan supporters of Parliament
In 1644, the Roundheads appoint Oliver Cromwell their new general
Organized the “New Model Army” and began defeating the Cavaliers
In 1647, the Roundheads captured King Charles and brought him to trail for treason,
Guilty and executed!!!!
This was the first time a King had been tried and executed by his own people.
