4. Receive
As Saul was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’ He asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ The reply came, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.’

5. Engage
The conversion of the anti-Christian fanatic, Saul (later known as Paul), is told in chapter 9 of the Acts of the Apostles. Later Paul wrote in his Letter to the Church in Galatia, "God set me apart before I was born and called me through his grace ... Three years after (the Damascus Road conversion), I went up to Jerusalem." The preparation for this moment of his conversion was his whole life. This feast has been celebrated in the Church since the sixth century but became universal in the twelfth century.

Paul was a great missionary. What do missionaries do?
Paul was known to be a great debater. What skills do you think that he would need to have?
Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?”
Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair.
Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student.
Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections.
Activity suggestion … Write a tweet (140 characters) explaining the main things about Christian faith.

7. Respond Amen Almighty God, who caused the light of the gospel

Almighty God,

Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction). To pray or reflect on today’s worship. Be quiet for one minute. Then say the prayer …
