1 Name the countries the River Nile flows through

2 How will climate change and water scarcity affect people in the developing world (LEDCs)?
Learning Outcome: to describe and explain the impact of climate change in Egypt, a developing country exploringwhatmighthappen

3 True or False Egypt’s carbon emissions are low = 2.6 tonnes of greenhouse gases per person per year True The World average is 5.6 tonnes of greenhouse gases per person per year False, it is 6.8 tonnes per person per year In the UK the average emissions per person per year is 9.4 False, it is 11 Egypt’s 75 million people produce less than 1% of the whole world’s total green house gas emissions

4 Egypt in drawn map form and as a satellite image
Good opportunity to stress the differences and how combination of the resources on this slide can result in a greater understanding of the geography of the location. Ask students to draw lines between common features such as the significant meander which the map shows as anvil shaped but the image shows as horse-shoe shaped, why is this etc?.Spot the dam How could climate change affect people worldwide?

6 NB Egypt position as population/countries emissions
Water wars – Uganda and Ethiopia damming the headwaters of the Nile as their populations rise and climate changes e.g. precipitation becomes unreliable. Salination plants and technology, where will they get the money.

7 In Egypt, a developing country in Africa, climate change will pose a significant problem. If sea levels rise by 50cm, due to thermal expansion, one third of the coastal city of Alexandria will be flooded. This would mean over 7 million people being displaced. A reduction in precipitation may mean other African countries, such as Uganda, will dam the River Nile upstream. This will result in less irrigation water and possible crop failure. This could lead to widespread famine in Egypt. Mark this answer – as a learning group give this answer a level and a score out of 6. Justify the mark. Place mentioned and question referred to. Use of statistics and place names to evidence their points. Good use of keywords. ‘Thermal Expansion’ is hyperlinked to a Youtube video of an experiment. SPG is of high quality.

8 Exam question “The consequences of global climate change are determined by poverty.” Discuss the Statement with reference to examples. (15 marks) Discuss the consequences of Global warming. Likely to include rising sea levels etc. Link the consequences to poverty – more likely to affect poor populations than rich as they live in marginal areas with high risk. Without coping mechanisms such as insurance they are more vulnerable. Whereas wealthy countries can adopt protection strategies such as coastal defence. High end marks will be given to candidates who discuss a range of consequences and include at least two examples.
