1 bellringer Add questions and summary to Community Ecology Notes
3 things you learned 2 things you found interesting 1 question you still have

2 Learning targets Summarize the current state and effects of human population growth. Describe the importance of effective renewable and non- renewable resource management.

3 Human impact on ecosystems

4 Human Impact on ecosystems
As the human population grows, the demand for Earth’s resources increases.

5 Earth’s human carrying capacity is unknown.

6 Human impact on ecosystems
Technology has helped to increase Earth’s carrying capacity. gas-powered farm equipment medical advancements

7 Human impact on ecosystems
The growing human population exerts pressure on Earth’s natural resources. Nonrenewable resources are used faster than they form. Coal Oil Renewable resources cannot be used up or can replenish themselves over time faster than being used. Though if not used carefully, they can become nonrenewable. Wind Water Sunlight Trees/Animals Growing use of nonrenewable resources may lead to a crisis. Resources must be properly managed. Earth’s resources must be used responsibly. Careless use of resources makes them unavailable to future generations.

8 Ecological footprint An ecological footprint is the amount of land needed to support a person. It is a measure of human impact on Earth's ecosystems. The land must produce and maintain enough food and water shelter energy waste Several factors affect the size of the ecological footprint. amount and efficiency of resource use amount and toxicity of waste produced

9 What is your ecological footprint?
